Out East
NYC & Canada
Made it home last night from a few weeks out east. I spent some time in New York City seeing friends and visiting the Parsons School for Constructed Environments where, this fall, I’m planning to enter the MFA in Interior Design program. After New York, I flew to Buffalo and did a five-day tour in Canada. I was impressed by the breadth of the landscapes and general cleanliness, and was really happy to meet a lot of nice Canadians. Another visit to Montréal should definitely be in order.
Still Sound
Remix
In February, I did a remix of “Still Sound” for Toro y Moi’s remix contest. You can listen to it here on my SoundCloud page. The original is full of great rhythms and textures that I explored in a longer form, focusing on elements that were initially buried or at the service of vocals/lyrics.
Summer Happenings
Update
After graduating in May and concluding my time teaching at the Ji-Eun Lee Music Academy, I had the opportunity to spend the month of June touring across the US as a supporting musician. I had previously been as far west as Arizona, but this tour swept from Phoenix up through Southern California, allowing me to visit San Diego, Los Angeles, and the Pacific Ocean for the first time. It’s interesting just how difficult it is to remember what it was I knew going into the tour and what it was I learned explicitly from it. This feels very similar to the period following my return from half a year’s study in the UK. Much of what we gain from that type of experience just seems to sneak up in our periphery, a clear awareness of its impact materializing only in retrospect—and even then, not always so comprehensively.
Probably my favorite venue on the tour: Lambert’s in Austin, Texas.
Composition Recital
Recital
A couple weeks ago (April 1st) I had my senior composition recital to fulfill the final project requirements of my Music Engineering Technology degree at Ball State University. This was the first time, other than with my electric guitar quartet, that I’ve been able to see my acoustic works performed. Good friend, and great photographer, Katelin Carter, took photos during the dress rehearsal. You can see the other photos on her blog, which is great.
New Music Festival
40th Annual Ball State University Festival of New Music
I’ll be playing at the Ball State Festival of New Music tomorrow night (2/12), in Sursa Hall at 8:00 pm. The electric guitar quartet I’m in will be performing my Four Punctuations for Electric Guitar Quartet and David Lang’s, Revolutionary Etude No. 1 (lyrical and hard). The event is free and all are welcome!

This is a sound sketch for a collection of pieces I’m writing called, Four Punctuations for Electric Guitar Quartet. This particular movement is based around the form and function of a comma. It’s as if the pause indicated by a comma has been stretched and translated into a musical pasture. The harmonies in the piece follow the shape of a comma tipped on its side, gradually thickening around the comma’s curve and merging into a unison near the tip of its tail.
